The original Barney

Nip-it-in-the-bud! Just heard of the passing of actor, Don Knotts, 81. He died of natural causes last night in hospital in Beverly Hills. Deputy Fife was one of the greatest television characters of all time. The genius that was Don Knotts never went for the dark, the blue, or questionable in comedy. RIP, Barney.

Curling Sweeps

Five hundred years later, Olympic curling posts big viewer gains among U.S. viewers. Who would have expected this? MSNBC is reporting that their sister station, CNBC, has posted unexpected increases of over 30% in broadcasts of the sport of … curling! From what I can gather, the game is credited to Scotland dating back to 1511 where the game was played on frozen marshes using “channel stones” that had been worn smooth by the action of water. Archaeological evidence of a curling stone (the famous Stirling Stone) inscribed with the date 1511 turned up, along with another bearing the date 1551, when an old pond was drained at Dunblane, Scotland. Five hundred years in the making and curling seems to be piquing interest. This could either trigger another cavalcade of reality TV shows on the fine art of the broom or it could be a statement as to how poorly the rest of the Olympic events are faring.

Martha Trumped

You’re fired…no, you don’t fit in…no, you’re fired…no, you don’t fit in…you’re – “What moron would think you’re going to fire the guy with the No. 1 show on television?” That, from ‘The Donald’ to Newsweek on Martha Stewart’s cold platter of cheese. It was obvious that Trump was cheesing-it for the press throughout the Titanic season of two apprentices, no waiting. “What I didn’t like is that I defended Martha many, many times and I never got a note. I never got a phone call saying, ‘Donald, thank you very much,’” Trump said on CNBC’s Donny Deutch program. Et tu Martha? Stewart actually believed that her job was to be the heir apparant of the Apprentice franchise, with Trump taking a walk after some introductory seasons. Hand written note to Martha, “You just didn’t fit in.”

UAE, seaports, and Congress, oh my…

Port Whine, Continued… Here’s a story in the 2/20/06 Washington Times on Congressional push-back that is expected on the Bush administration’s initiative to allow the sale of port management to transfer to a UAE state owned company. Here’s one deal that simply cannot be allowed to go through. If this all goes away within a week I will consider it a bad attempt at humor. Any longer, then, it will be a rather respectable attempt at lunacy.

The trouble with Harry

17 February, 2006

Taking Aim That’s the problem. There is no trouble with Harry. You know, the man that the vice president accidently shot while quail hunting in Texas last weekend? Harry was released today after six days in hospital. His presser was to the point and significant for his concern for his friend, the vice president, and the problems that Harry’s being shot has caused the vice president! No smoking gun there. Just a good hunting buddy. The press pool finally gets the story but with nothing to print.
